How to Overcome Self-Doubt, Build Workplace Confidence, and Become Unstoppable in Your Career
Author: April Ogden, Founder and CEO, It’s Your Outcome
Do you know that voice in your head? The one that whispers, “You’re not good enough.” I used to hear it loud and clear every time I stepped into a meeting. I doubted myself, sat quietly, and let opportunities pass me by. But one day, it hit me: That voice is a liar.
I realized something powerful: Confidence isn’t a feeling you wait for—it’s a skill you build.
That realization changed everything. I didn’t suddenly wake up fearless. I had to start small—speaking up for the accommodations I needed in the workplace, having uncomfortable conversations with my manager, and embracing the fact that I deserved a seat at the table.
Each small win? It wasn’t just a victory. It was a brick in the foundation of my self-worth.
As I often tell my clients: “Confidence is not about being fearless; it’s about acting despite the fear.” This truth shaped my journey and can shape yours too.
Here’s what changed my career—and my life:
1. Self-Advocacy is Everything: No one is going to give you what you don’t ask for. Speak up. Your voice is your power.
2. The Power of Small Wins: It’s not about one giant leap; it’s about the tiny steps you take each day to stand up for yourself.
3. Build Your Confidence Muscle: Just like working out, confidence gets stronger the more you use it. Flex it often, even when it’s hard.
4. Your Allies Matter: Surround yourself with people who support your journey. Don’t go it alone—your network is a game-changer.
5. You Are Enough, Exactly as You Are: Waiting for validation from others? Stop. Own your worth, right now. No one will value you more than you value yourself.
Did you know that employees who advocate for their workplace needs are 33% more likely to feel satisfied and engaged at work? It’s a game-changer not only for your career but also for your personal well-being.
Fast forward to today, and I’m leading conversations with global leaders from companies like Amazon. I’m co-hosting global audio events and building a consulting business where I get to help others break free from self-doubt.
But none of this would’ve happened if I hadn’t made that first decision to advocate for myself in the workplace.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re not enough, like you’re afraid to ask for what you need, let me tell you: You are more than enough. Confidence doesn’t come from waiting for permission—it comes from owning who you are and refusing to let self-doubt keep you small.
To leaders reading this: Creating a culture where self-advocacy in the workplace is encouraged isn’t simply goodfor your employees—it’s good for your business. When people feel empowered to ask for what they need, they perform at their best, and your team thrives.
So, here’s my challenge to you:
What’s one thing you’ve been too scared to ask for at work? Today, I want you to take that step. Advocate for yourself. It will change everything.
Want to dive deeper into how I built my confidence?
I provide practical strategies on overcoming self-doubt in the workplace and advocating for yourself as an employee with a disability.
It’s time to stop doubting and start thriving.

P.S. I’ve been pouring my heart into something I know will make a real difference—my upcoming book on disability inclusion in the workplace. It’s not just another take on inclusion; it shines a light on the (overlooked details) that can truly transform how we work and lead. This is about the things we don’t always consider, but that can change everything. Whether you’re a leader, an advocate, or navigating these challenges yourself, this book will open new doors.
